We have always heard that it is the liability and job of the nation to empower its women.

To empower women means giving them the authority to make their decisions, giving them the license of freedom, giving her the accreditation to speak her mind and demonstrate her opinions, and giving her the commission to become successful, confident, powerful, fearless, and her boss.

Women and Girl empowerment

Empowerment refers to the grant and permission of power to enact and bring out numerous duties and responsibilities.

According to a study, the Indian lawyer, political person, and anti-colonial nationalist, Mahatma Gandhi, said: “The prestige of women will not change in our country only by putting some legislations; it needs the proper support to change the situations and social norms about women and also the sexist and partial behavior of men towards women.”

In the 1980s, “women empowerment” became very known and popular. It referred to making women strong individuals alongside men and strengthening women who have been suffering from discrimination about their gender in this society.

I am explaining what is women empowerment, what is women empowerment principle and what are the types of women empowerment in this article.

What are women empowerment principles?

The UN document, Endorsing the Principle of Women’s Empowerment, states seven principles:

Establishing high-level cooperative leadership for equality of genders.

Treating everyone equitably at the workplace, admiring, appreciating, and supporting human rights and non-discrimination.

Ensuring the welfare, wellness, and safety of both men and women workers in the workplace.

Fostering women’s training, education, and career development.

Implementing the supply chain, commercialization practices, and business development will empower women.

Promoting equality through Community initiatives and defending rights.

Measuring and reporting, the progress made towards achieving gender equality.

Types of women empowerments

Five types of women empowerments are significant for us to know if you want to learn about what is women empowerment.

Dr. Keshab Chandra Mandal, a famous columnist, researcher, and inspirational speaker from India, explains women’s empowerment in five categories. These are, social, economic, educational, psychological, and political.

1. Social Women empowerment

It is one of the most noteworthy types of women’s empowerment highly shown in media. It means empowering women in their social relationships and their positions in society. The role of a woman in modern society has extreme versatility, and we can see women in every field. Giving social empowerment to females means that we should show them and teach them to fight back against the discrimination they face, the racial prejudice, the clashes of religions, and many more.

From a survey and study, Women are taught their land rights in Nigeria because they still have no knowledge about inheritance and what is rightfully theirs. Women are taught safety measures for their protection against the violence they face due to gender in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

There are many more countries where the social empowerment of women is normalized. They are educating their people on what is women empowerment and teaching women their rights for the betterment of their lives, health, and well-being in the future.

2. Economic Women empowerment

One of the types that explains what is women empowerment is the economic education of women, which is always ignored because of gender discrimination.

According to the estimations of research, when the proper economical education is provided to women, it increases 50% growth of the economics of a country, and it has been seen in the last five decades, especially in the OECD countries.

Economic women encouragement is necessary and vital in accepting the rights of women. A nation must increase women’s skills by providing them the proper education, upskilling, and redefining their capabilities.

It was also calculated that companies whohave women in their managing departments are functioniong high and scoring well in all the dimensions.

The business and growth of any country need the involvement of women as the increasing employment of women in different workplaces is benefiting companies, and their production is increasing.

3. Educational Women empowerment

We can empower women by educating them as it is one of the basic rights of a human being. The impact of education on a women’s life is very great, and it helps women learn what they deserve to know.

Global statistics showed that around two-thirds of the universe’s 796 million illiterate people are only women. And more is that 39% of rural girls attend school less than the rural boys as their percentage is 45%, urban boys and urban girls have a ratio of 60% and 59% respectively.

Education guides women to make better health choices, and they will make their own decisions when they are educated. Education will empower women to overcome poverty and lack of recourses.

Research conducted on global citizens showed that education greatly impacts women’s careers. Even if a woman goes to school for a year, it will increase the lifetime earning of women by 20%.

If you want to teach the female around you what is women empowerment, then you need to educate them for a dignified life.

4. Psychological Women empowerment

It is important to give psychological empowerment to women. When we empower women’s brains, and their mental health becomes good, it gives them peace. They become independent, their self-esteem increases, and they become powerful.

Mokokoma Mokhonoana, a philosopher, poet, and social critic said: “We can only decrease the difficulties from our lives if we can increase the strength and ability of our minds.”

Women should take part in programs, events, and therapies for their psychological well-being and the betterment of their minds. When a woman is strong psychologically, she can handle all the obstacles that come to her path of success and growth. When a woman is mentally empowered, she learns the meaning of what is women empowerment. Psychological empowerment helps women surpass the traditional and social barriers that stop them from going ahead and becoming fearless.

5. Political Women empowerment

Women have suffered greatly over the years under the control of men. In the preceding centuries, women were treated as almost nonexistent. As if all rights belong to men, even as fundamental as the right to vote. It is a great idea to teach women what is women empowerment and help them in growth. Having a strong voice in politics can be substantial by allowing a group’s viewpoint to be pushed in the light of mainstream media.

Women and girls make up 50% of the world’s population but are often left out of politics.

Women’s political engagement involves decentralizing power and authority in the impoverished, oppressed, and helpless who have not been a part of the decision-making process and the implementation of government and organization policies and programs and personal and societal issues.
